Modern Foreign Languages at Woden

What we say about MFL at Woden Primary School…

Introduction

As part of the primary National Curriculum, learning a Modern Foreign Language is a requirement for children within KS2. At Woden, we intend to provide a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.

Aims for the teaching of MFL at Woden Primary School

At Woden Primary School, our intention is to provide quality teaching and learning of Modern Foreign Language.

We aim:

  • To develop children’s experience of language acquisition and encourage curiosity about languages.
  • To develop their understanding of what they hear and read
  • To allow children to have an ability to express themselves in speech and writing.
  • To extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences between French and English
  • To strengthen children’s sense of identity through learning about French culture and comparing it with their own culture.
  • To acquire, through all of the above, a sound basis for further study at Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Whole School Celebrations

At Woden, we believe celebrating the diversity within our school is important and provide opportunities for children to participate in special days, organised to celebrate different cultures and languages.

We celebrate:

  • Bastille Day
  • European Languages Day

These events are a whole school celebration and children are involved in a range of activities from art and design to dance and sport workshops. Previous years have included storytelling workshops by Freshwater Theatre and links with secondary schools.
