Design and technology

At Woden, we value Design Technology and the opportunities that it provides for our children to be creative and express themselves. This is a key part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. We have carefully designed and structured our curriculum to ensure children develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful. 

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:  

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world  
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users  
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. 

Here at Woden, we provide our children with opportunities to develop their skills in designing, making and evaluating a range of products through a range of media, including and related to food technology, woodwork, sewing, moving mechanisms and more. As our children progress through school, our D.T curriculum allows them to build upon prior knowledge and skills, giving them opportunities to apply them to a new context. In order to prepare them for their future, D.T will also support the children to develop key learning behaviours such as resilience, risk taking, resourcefulness, relationships and reflection.   

D.T is about providing opportunities for children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. In doing this, children are making positive contributions and changes to their own and others’ lives. They develop a curiosity for learning and uncover and discover new skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. Making mistakes is a huge part of D.T through a trial and error approach and this is integral to all learning.

Activities at home: 

  • Junk modelling – use some recycling to create a model. Can you make any moving parts? 
  • Safely help an adult with some DIY around the house  
  • Use building blocks or lego to create a model – what can you create? 
  • Design and make a photo frame, for a special photograph or picture, using cardboard
